Basics of Law Librarianship, 1st Session: Intro to US Law, Legal Research & Secondary Sources

SLA NY and LLAGNY has organized several sessions to review general aspects of law librarianship as well as all the concrete aspects of the profession, including working in a law firm library, public library or a law school library.  This will be covered in four 60-90 minute sessions.

The audience for this series are information professionals who want a fuller understanding of the work done by various members of the law librarianship departments, LIS students interested in understanding what is under the hood of law librarianship, information professionals already working in law librarian environments and are looking at a better understanding of the other parts of the department to see a potential for how they can transfer into those roles.

The first session in this series will be led by Bill Mills.  Bill will give an introduction to legal research in the American legal system.  His presentation will cover bibliographic and research characteristics of the specialized legal research tools and sources.  It will help you to understand the role of the librarian in the legal research process, and to place legal research into the context of the wider world of research.

Bill Mills holds a M.S.L.S. degree from Columbia’s School of Library Service and a J.D. degree from Fordham Law School.

He began his career at the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where he managed the library, planned and coordinated a move into a new building, and oversaw the installation of LEXIS, the first computer legal research system. He then attended law school and moved into academia, first serving as the evening librarian at Seton Hall University School of Law. After a year, he joined the founding faculty at City University of New York (CUNY) Law School as public services librarian. At CUNY, Bill participated in the planning and execution of three library relocations, including the library’s move into its permanent facility on the Queens College campus. He also coordinated CUNY’s legal research skills course, a comprehensive program of instruction for first and second year students that was integrated with other curricular work.

Bill joined the Mendik Library at New York Law School as Professor of Legal Research in 1989.  Before his recent retirement, Bill was in charge of Information and Technology Resources, which encompasses acquisition and dissemination of the Library’s electronic information resources, as well as maintenance and development of the Integrated Library System and the Library website.  Bill’s duties at NYLS also included various teaching roles.  He participated in the research instruction program for first year students, conducted workshops on various research topics, and regularly taught the Advanced Legal Research seminar.

During his tenure at NYLS, Bill also held teaching appointments at Pratt Institute and Queens College, where he taught courses in law librarianship.

Bill has been active in leadership roles in the Law Library Association of Greater New York (LLAGNY), and the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).  He served a term as president of LLAGNY.
